A student move to Manchester works best when you know exactly when you can enter your room, where to collect the keys and where your belongings can be unloaded. A university start date or a hall postcode alone does not answer those questions.
Start with the instructions for your actual accommodation. Then plan packing and transport around the confirmed arrangements. The same approach helps when you leave halls for a shared house, particularly if the two contracts do not meet on the same day.
Confirm the room before arranging the journey
Keep your accommodation confirmation, contract dates and arrival messages together. Write down the hall or property name, block, room number and contact details, rather than relying on the main university address.
For University of Manchester halls, the university says move-in dates vary by hall and asks students to confirm accommodation before booking travel. Its online induction must be completed before an arrival slot can be booked. Follow the current University of Manchester pre-arrival guidance and the instructions sent to you.
If your room is managed by Manchester Metropolitan University or a private provider, use that provider's accommodation portal and arrival email. Do not transfer another university's times, parking rules or key arrangements to your booking. If an instruction is missing, ask the accommodation team before committing to a transport time.
Treat key collection and unloading as separate tasks
Your room address, key collection point and vehicle entrance may differ. Save all three where relevant, along with the contact who can help if you are delayed.
The University of Manchester's key collection page lists arrangements by hall and asks students to bring photographic ID, their University ID number and accommodation details. It also distinguishes university-managed and leased halls. Use the entry for your hall rather than assuming every reception has the same hours.
Its arrival guidance describes limited drop-off space at several sites, with separate arrangements elsewhere. A car drop-off description does not by itself confirm access for your chosen van. Ask the accommodation team about the vehicle, entrance and unloading arrangements you need.
Before moving day, resolve these questions:
- Does your arrival appointment cover key collection, unloading or both?
- Where may the vehicle stop, and what happens once unloading is finished?
- Are there height restrictions, stairs, a lift booking or a long carry to the room?
- Who will collect the keys while the belongings remain secure?
- Who should you contact if you cannot meet the agreed time?
Pass confirmed access details to your mover. For a more detailed plan involving restricted loading and lifts, use the city-moving guide.
Pack for the room you have
Check what is supplied before buying or moving furniture and appliances. Look at your provider's room inventory, bed size and prohibited-items guidance; rules can differ between buildings.
Separate belongings into things you need immediately, items you will use during term and things you can leave behind. Keep identification, accommodation messages, medication, chargers and a change of clothes accessible. Pack enough bedding and basic supplies for the first night without needing an immediate shopping trip.
Agree shared kitchen purchases with housemates where possible. Buying the same bulky appliance several times creates extra transport and storage work.
Plan a move from halls to a shared house
Confirm the old room's departure deadline and the new home's actual key handover time. Ask the landlord or accommodation team directly if the dates or times are unclear. Permission to enter a new home should be confirmed before belongings are sent there.
Use a simple handover note:
| Detail | Record before arranging transport |
|---|---|
| Leaving | Last permitted day and time, room clearance requirements and key return method |
| Arriving | First permitted entry time, key collection point and contact |
| Belongings | Complete load, including anything collected from housemates |
| Access | Floors, stairs, lift arrangements and vehicle position at each stop |
| Unresolved questions | Who will confirm each answer and when you will follow up |
If there is a gap, arrange both somewhere for yourself to stay and a confirmed place for your belongings. These are separate arrangements. The University of Manchester's moving-out guidance says its halls do not provide storage areas, so do not assume boxes can remain after your stay ends.
For a storage facility, confirm the unit, opening hours, access process and who will receive the load. Include both the storage delivery and any later collection in your plans. Booking transport does not reserve a storage unit or automatically include the return journey.
Give the mover the complete job
Count boxes and suitcases, list furniture, and measure bulky items. Include every collection and delivery address, the access at each stop and any agreed accommodation window. If housemates share transport, combine all their items and stops before requesting the quote.
Explain who can help with loading and unloading, and confirm the assistance included. Declare dismantling or reassembly needs in advance. Ask about booked time, extra-time charges and the applicable cover, limits and exclusions; these should not be inferred from a general service description.
Build your moving budget from the actual job: transport, packing materials, any storage, and any additional journey. Check quoted prices against the same load and help requirements. Our student moving service explains the service scope, while man and van in Manchester provides the local quote route.
Check the room before settling in
When you arrive, check the room and supplied items against the accommodation inventory. Record existing damage and report discrepancies through the provider's stated process, keeping your own copy. University of Manchester residents can follow its inventory instructions.
Unpack essentials first and keep shared entrances clear. Before leaving your previous room, follow its clearance and key-return instructions rather than assuming the next occupant can take the keys from you.
With the room, keys, access and full load confirmed, you can arrange moving help around a plan that fits your accommodation.
