Moving boxes and packing supplies: preparing your order

Plan your packing supplies before moving day: choose manageable box sizes, protect fragile items and check delivery dates before ordering.

Getting your packing supplies ready early gives you time to pack in stages and spot anything that needs extra protection. Start with a room-by-room list of what you are moving, including fragile items, books, bedding and furniture.

Choose boxes you can handle safely

Use smaller boxes for dense items such as books, and larger boxes for lighter items such as bedding. Check the supplier's stated load limits. A box that has become damp, split or weakened may not be suitable for another move.

Measure awkward items before ordering specialist packaging. Keep original protective packaging for electronics where it is still suitable, and avoid leaving fragile items loose inside a large box.

Build a practical supplies list

  • Strong packing tape and a marker for sealing and labelling boxes.
  • Packing paper or other suitable protection for fragile belongings.
  • Covers appropriate to mattresses and upholstered furniture.
  • A separate essentials box for items you need on arrival.

Label boxes by destination room and flag fragile contents. Keep each box manageable and tell your movers about items that need particular handling.

Check the order before paying

Compare dimensions, quantities, delivery charges and the expected arrival date. Check any offer and its conditions with the supplier at the time of purchase.

Allow time for packing after the supplies arrive. If you need packing assistance, check how to request packing help before booking.

Prepare the move details too

Include the packed boxes and larger items when describing your move. Access, loading help and the amount being moved all matter when choosing a van. Read our packing guides for the next steps.
