Updating Your TV Licence When Moving– A Step-by-Step Guide

How much notice do you require?

If you watch live TV on any channel or use BBC iPlayer, you’ll need to update your TV licence so it’s registered to your new address, as it won’t transfer automatically. The good news is that updating your address can be done up to three months before your move. It’s a good idea to do this early if possible so you’ll have one less thing to think about as moving day gets closer. Don’t worry—it’s a simple process and only takes a few minutes to do online. This guide is here to take you through the process step by step.

Updating Your TV Licence When Moving– A Step-by-Step Guide

Why You Need a TV Licence

In the UK, a TV licence funds the BBC's services, including TV, radio, online content, and apps like BBC iPlayer. This includes news, classic dramas like Doctor Who, documentaries such as Planet Earth, as well as children's shows on CBBC. It covers you for all TV channels, pay TV services like Sky, and live TV on streaming services like Amazon Prime Video, Youtube, Netflix and Freely. Your licence fee also supports services like Freeview and Freesat.

Why You Need to Update Your TV Licence When Moving

Your TV licence is linked to your home address, so if you move, you’ll need to update it so that it stays valid. It’s best to do it as soon as possible to avoid any gaps in coverage or risk a fine if you’re caught without one.

How to Change Your TV Licence Address

Changing your details online only takes a few minutes and can be done in 3 easy steps.

1. Visit the website

The easiest way to change your address is by visiting the TV licensing website and going to the “update" section.

2. Enter your details

You’ll need your TV licence number, old address, and new address. Don’t worry if you can’t find the number; there’s an option to search for it on the website using your current details. You’ll also need to input your last name as it’s written on your licence.

3. Confirm and Submit.

Review and confirm your details, then submit the request.

If you’ve opted for paper billing, you’ll receive confirmation of your updated address by post; if you’ve chosen paperless billing, you'll receive it by email. Once you’re done, your TV licence will transfer seamlessly to your new home.

What If You Don’t Need a TV Licence?

If you’re moving and no longer watch live TV or use BBC iPlayer, you may not need a licence. In this case, you can let TV Licensing know and apply for a No Licence Needed Declaration. You may also be able to request a refund for any unused months.

Other Address Changes to Consider

While you’re updating your TV licence, don’t forget to change your address with other key services like:

  • Council Tax
  • Utilities (gas, electricity, water, broadband)
  • Bank and credit card providers
  • Driving licensing (DVLA)
